Children expolore 'Our Community' with local MP

Dawn Primarolo visits Connaught Primary School, Knowle West

This Friday (22 November), Dawn Primarolo, Paymaster General and Bristol South MP, will visit Connaught Primary School to see for herself an exciting new project being supported by Inland Revenue in Bristol.

Since the beginning of November, volunteers from the local Inland Revenue office have been working with Year 2 children at the Knowle West school on a project called 'Our Community'. The project helps the 6 and 7 year olds to discover how different people, businesses and money operate in the community, and introduces them to ideas about voting, decision-making and public services.

Speaking today, Ms Primarolo said:

"As the Departmental Minister for Inland Revenue, I was particularly pleased to hear about this project in my constituency and want to find out more. From what I've heard, the earlier sessions were really exciting for the children, so I think we'll be in for a treat this Friday!"

"This is a project that really does benefit everyone. The children are given opportunities to learn in new and innovative ways about how to take responsibility for their own community. The volunteers gain self-confidence and improve their skills. And Inland Revenue ends up with staff who are more connected with the communities it serves".

Dawn hopes that her visit, as well as helping her keep in touch with what is going on in her constituency, will encourage other businesses and agencies to follow Inland Revenue's lead and get involved in similar projects.

"This project is part of the Young Enterprise Scheme primary programme, a national scheme involving over 75,000 young people each year. However, its success relies on the active involvement of volunteers from business. I hope that by promoting this successful project, other volunteers will come forward", Dawn concluded.
