Labour politicians hail milestone applications

Primarolo and Holland call for endorsement of regeneration plans

Leading Bristol South Labour politicians, Dawn Primarolo and Helen Holland, have thrown their weight behind two 'milestone' applications due to be considered at tomorrow's South & East Area Planning Committee.

Submitting written statements in support of the planning applications for Hengrove Park and Symes Avenue, they are calling upon councillors not simply to approve the plans, but to move rapidly to make them both a reality at the earliest opportunity.

Speaking today, Dawn said: "Local residents have fought long and hard for a South Bristol Hospital, and I know they are eager to see improvements to leisure facilities in the area. A vote in favour of the Hengrove Park plans will ensure that speedy progress can be made on our hospital, and pave the way for a step change in swimming and sports provision in Bristol South".

Helen continued: "Symes Avenue is in the heart of my ward, but is not the heart of the community that it ought to be. Over the years we have all worked tirelessly to make something happen, so I am delighted that we now have a plan that will bring not just local shopping to Hartcliffe, but also jobs, life, activity and services to make Symes thrive once more".

Describing the plans as 'far-reaching' and affecting 'almost every aspect of life in Bristol South - from where we live, to where we work, how we spend our free time, and how healthy we are', Ms Primarolo added: "It has taken us a long time - too long, arguably - to get to this point. So while I am sure residents will welcome councillors' support for each of the planning applications, what they want to see is action on the ground".

Echoing these comments, Councillor Holland concluded: "I sincerely hope that councillors will not simply approve both applications, but warmly endorse them, and encourage Council officers, partners and developers to move with all speed to make them both a reality".
