Sustained unemployment drop for Bristol South

Ten years on from May 1997: Dawn welcomes new figures

Figures published last week confirm that Bristol South constituency has seen one of the biggest sustained drops in unemployment in England and Wales.

With a 62% decrease in May 2007 compared with ten years earlier, when Labour was first elected, the fall in Jobseeker's Allowance claimants was greater in just a handful of other constituencies.

Welcoming this news, local MP Dawn Primarolo said:

"I am delighted that we have not only been able to achieve a sustained fall in unemployment, but that employment has also risen by nearly 2.5m, giving us some of the highest employment rates on record".

"It is Labour's welfare reforms, and the strong economy we have built locally and nationally, that are helping more people to come off benefits and look for work - but we are determined to go further still, and to break for good the cycle of poverty that continues to blight too many lives".
