MP celebrates leap towards improved health care

Local health centres see major investment

Dawn Primarolo, Labour MP for Bristol South, is celebrating last week's boost to health facilities in her constituency.

Speaking today, Dawn said: "I was thrilled to receive confirmation from the Minister that three health centres - St John's Lane, Hartcliffe and Whitchurch - will receive funding to substantially improve their facilities. This is fantastic news for my constituents".

The announcement by health minister John Hutton is a significant step forward for Bristol's health facilities. It gives the green light to new centres that will give patients a greater possible range of health services - from GPs to dental services, pharmacies, or even welfare benefits advice - all under one roof. The announcement means local Primary Care Trusts can now start work on the detailed planning.

"It's great to see these Health Centres receive the investment they deserve", Ms Primarolo commented. "In four years' time, under this scheme, Bristol South should have three improved facilities, two of them brand new. And that's on top of the Knowle West Health Park that we've already delivered!"

Dawn continued: "This investment comes not a moment too soon: after years and years of neglect under the Tories, many existing facilities are totally unsatisfactory. By taking some tough, but necessary, decisions, the Labour Government is now making progress on delivering the modern NHS we all want to see".
