MPs ‘delighted’ at Government investment
Dawn Primarolo and Kerry McCarthy, Labour’s MPs for Bristol South
and Bristol East, have today welcomed the news that Bristol will
benefit from £42 million Government funding for the creation of the
Greater Bristol Bus Network (GBBN). Transport Minister Rosie
Winterton announced the Government’s decision on a visit to Bristol
on Tuesday morning. The GBBN will see significant
improvements to ten bus corridors in and around Bristol, with
passengers set to benefit from improved reliability, more services
and improved facilities both on-board and on bus
stops.
Commenting, Dawn said:
“This is fantastic news for Bristol. Everyone agrees that bus services in our city need improving, and this money will go a long way to make buses the smart way to travel in and around Bristol. What we now need to do is work with First to make sure that these new services are affordable and, of course, reliable.”
Kerry, who was with Ms Winterton when she made her announcement, added:
“I have been pressing the Department for Transport to
approve GBBN’s funding bid for some time now so I was delighted to
hear about Rosie’s announcement. Improvements to these
corridors will help get people out of their cars and on to
buses. Buses will be more reliable, and every person who
chooses to leave the car at home helps improve Bristol’s congestion
problem.”
