Sustainable Development Strategy

Letter from Westminster - 7 March 2005

On Monday, Tony Blair confirmed our determination to take the lead on environmental issues, when he launched the new cross-government sustainable development strategy.

Labour has already put climate change at the top of the international agenda, using Britain's year as president of the G8 and European Union to secure agreement on the urgent need to tackle one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. Nationally, we are on track to go significantly beyond our Kyoto target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but more needs to be done if we are going to meet our goal of reducing carbon dioxide by 20% below 1990 levels by 2010. This week's sustainable development strategy demonstrates that the government is prepared to lead by example - we will, for instance, ensure that we compensate for carbon dioxide released as a result of any unavoidable air travel incurred through our work by investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

However, sustainable development cannot be delivered by government alone. Nor is it just about climate change, important though that is. Since sustainable development relates to every aspect of our lifestyles - from what we produce and consume, to where we live and work, and how we travel between the two - we will only make progress by giving local people the powers, support and information they need to demand and choose more sustainable options. As your MP, and a local residents myself, I also have a role to play, which is why I am supporting the campaign for a plastic bottle bank in Totterdown, and am working with the City Council to secure a new round of investment in our bus services.
