New hospital benefits will extend beyond South Bristol

MP welcomes predicted reductions in congestion and pollution

Bristol South MP, Dawn Primarolo, has hailed figures that indicate that at least 50,000 journeys into the city centre could be saved by the planned South Bristol Hospital.

"We have proved beyond doubt that we need a hospital to improve South Bristol's health; these figures now show that it will benefit other parts of the city too", Dawn said today. "Fewer trips into the city centre mean less hassle for my constituents, and less congestion and pollution for the people who live and work around the city centre".

Transport is emerging as a key issue in both the Primary Care Trust consultation and Ms Primarolo's e-survey, launched two weeks ago.

"Wherever the hospital is built, it's important that it's accessible to everyone living in South Bristol. This means that we must look particularly closely at bus services, as none of the possible sites are especially well served currently", Dawn continued.

Ms Primarolo raised this issue with Alex Perry, Managing Director of First Bus.

"I was delighted to receive a really positive response from Alex Perry, but was unhappy to learn that the City Council had not made much effort to discuss this matter with him previously. I sincerely hope that this foot-dragging does not indicate a lack of commitment to the project", Dawn said.

First Bus has now been put in direct contact with the Primary Care Trust. Ms Primarolo is also writing to Councillor Anne White, who is responsible for transport in the city, for reassurance that her department is doing all it can to assist the hospital plans.

"After all the years of waiting, I think we need to be pulling together to make sure that nothing stands in the way of us getting our hospital", Dawn concluded.
