Support for South Street School campaign

Dawn backs call for more teachers in developing countries

Local MP Dawn Primarolo has met with pupils from a South Bristol school who are campaigning for more teachers for developing countries. Pupils from Iguana Class at South Street Primary School in Bedminster sent cut-out teachers to Dawn to highlight the 15 million teachers needed for an estimated 100 million children worldwide who do not receive a primary education.

Dawn said: "I am delighted that South Street has decided to support Oxfam and the Global Campaign for Education's campaign in this way. the children have worked so hard on producing their cut-out teachers, and have taken a real interest in the lives of others in the developing world".

Three of Iguana Class were selected to meet Tony Blair at Downing Street to discuss the campaign. "I was pleased to hear how much the children enjoyed their day at Number Ten", Dawn continued. "I know the Prime Minister has taken a keen interest in the campaign. We will work closely with our partners in the EU and the G8, as well as with developing countries, to build more schools, train more teachers and work towards ensuring universal primary education".

Dawn's visit came in the same week as the Government's White Paper on international development was launched. "I know from my postbag that people of all ages from across Bristol South are committed to helping people out of extreme poverty", Dawn commented. "That's why I'm delighted that the UK Government continues to lead the way by wiping out debt, striving to stop the spread of preventable diseases and, of course, working to ensure all children get a chance to learn".

The White Paper emphasises the importance of good governance and improving public services in developing countries. It also emphasises the importance of issues such as climate change, which will hit developing countries hardest.

"We have achieved so much, with the help of organisations like Make Poverty History, but there is more to do. The children at South Street have highlighted an issue that needs an urgent solution, and we will work tirelessly to find one", Dawn concluded.
