Voting is now well underway in The People’s £50 Million Lottery Giveaway. Four organisations are bidding for the funding, and Dawn Primarolo has pledged her support to Bristol based sustainable transport organisation Sustrans.
Sustrans’ Connect2 bid will promote cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable transport in 79 communities across the United Kingdom. Bristol will benefit from the Festival Way, a cycle route linking central Bristol to Ashton Court and Long Ashton. There will also be better links to Tyntsefield, the National Trust’s 19th century estate in Wraxall.
Commenting on Sustrans’ bid, Dawn said:
“I’m pleased to support this excellent bid. Obviously, it’s great to have a Bristol based project in the running for this massive funding boost, but these projects will have a real impact in communities throughout the country. Sustrans have promoted sustainable transport for over 30 years, and projects likes the National Cycle Path have been instrumental in encouraging people to leave the car at home.
If Sustrans won, we would see significant improvements to cycling and walking routes. But the bid is about more than that. It promotes healthy lifestyles and fitness and will make a contribution in the fight against climate change.”
Supporters can vote either online or by telephone. Online voting is open at www.thepeoples50million.org.uk. To vote by phone, please call 0870 24 24 602. Voting closes at noon today, with the winner announced later in the day.
Important update - 2pm, 12 December. The Connect 2 bid has been succesful, securing Sustrans £50 million funding. Congratulations to all the staff and volunteers who have worked so hard on the bid, and thanks to everyone who voted.
