Credits, councillors...and cake

Dawn Primarolo hosts coffee morning to boost pension credit take-up

Last Wednesday, some of Southville's older residents were given the chance to share coffee and cake with their MP and local councillors, Linda Salter and Matthew Symonds.

"I'm always trying to find new ways of keeping in contact with my constituents, so I can hear their concerns and offer advice and help where I can", Ms Primarolo said afterwards. "I also wanted to use this event to promote the new Pension Credit, which comes in next month, as I am sure many of my older constituents stand to benefit".

Across Britain as a whole, nearly half of all pensioner households will be entitled to help from the new Pension Credit, which is designed to extend help to people with small works pensions and modest savings. Dawn Primarolo invited specialist advisors from the Pension Service, so they would be on hand to provide detailed information and answer questions.

Local residents were also able to discuss local issues with their councillors and find out about some new health and environment projects in the area. Newly-elected councillor, Linda Salter, said: "I found it a really useful way to spend a morning. Hopefully we'll be able to organise more events like this one in the future".
