Top marks for GPs

Survey shows vast majority of patients happy with access

Dawn Primarolo, Labour MP for Bristol South and Minister of State for Public Health, has welcomed the publication of a major survey into patient access to GP services.  The survey, which was completed by over 2 million people across the UK, shows that the overwhelming majority of people in Bristol are satisfied with their GPs.

The Department of Health asked patients for their views on, amongst other things, opening hours, access to the surgery by telephone and whether they could see their choice of doctor.  Bristol Primary Care Trust scored highly, with 84 per cent of those who responded satisfied by their surgery’s opening hours and 87 per cent pleased with the telephone booking system.  87 per cent of people were able to see a GP within 48 hours, and 88 per cent were able to see a specific GP.

Commenting on the survey, Dawn said:

“This survey shows what an excellent service the vast majority of GPs are providing to their patients, both in Bristol and across the country.  Most people’s personal experience of the NHS is excellent, and it’s great news that patients are so happy with their GPs, who are such an important first point of contact.  Access to your GP is vital – you want to know that a professional, timely and good quality service will be there for you when you are unwell".

"This has been a major survey of patients, not just a snapshot.  With over 2 million people taking the time to respond to the survey, they provide an indication of what GPs are doing well.  Of course, there are still some areas to improve on, and we will be working with GPs and Primary Care Trusts to make sure that all aspects of general practice are performing well".

"I am particularly delighted that GPs in Bristol are doing so well, and would like to congratulate all those practices who are making sure patients have access to their services”.
