Bristol against the Bedroom Tax

Bristol Labour is organising a demonstration against the Tory/Lib Dem coalition’s bedroom tax at 12 noon this Saturday 16th March on College Green.

The government is cutting housing benefit for people with a spare room in their social or council home.

Here in Bristol South, Council figures show that 1,671 families will be affected, all losing at least £50 a month. But there are simply not enough alternative 1 or 2 bed homes for rent. This week the Council has advertised just six 1-bed and eleven 2-bed homes in the whole of the Bristol South constituency.

Speaking from her home where she is recovering from recent hip replacement surgery Dawn Primarolo MP said:

“The real solution to Bristol’s housing crisis is to build many more affordable homes.  This week we have seen even the CBI and the British Chamber of Commerce call for thousands of new Housing Association and Council homes to be built. It is time for Bristol’s Mayor to take the decisive action necessary to build the homes and create the jobs that Bristol needs. He should accept Labour’s plans to build 4000 homes by 2015 and get Bristol building.”
