Bristol can do better on affordable homes

Dawn Primarolo, Labour MP for Bristol South, is gravely disappointed by media reports that George Ferguson, Mayor of Bristol, has admitted that he will fail to meet his own limited target on the building of affordable homes in Bristol.

It is reported that rather than the 1000 a year by 2016 he promised following his election last November, as few as 600 will be built by 2017.

Dawn said:

“This will be devastating news for the nearly 15,000 families who are seeking an affordable home to rent and the thousands more with modest incomes who are looking to buy their first home”

“I am shocked at the Mayor’s lack of ambition for Bristol.

“The Mayor should now join me in lobbying Government to adopt Labour’s plan for homes:

•    “Use it or lose it” powers to stop developers hoarding land needed for homebuilding, unblocking the more than 5000 unbuilt homes with planning permission here in Bristol.

•    Allow local authorities to borrow to build many more new council houses.

•    Giving Bristol a “right to grow”, ensuring local authorities like North Somerset, B&NES and South Gloucestershire work with Bristol to meet housing need.
