Car Scrappage Scheme Success

The Government’s car scrappage scheme has been welcomed by a Bristol man who has received a £2,000 discount on a new car. Hengrove resident Barry Clark was so impressed with the scheme that he got in touch with his local MP Dawn Primarolo to let her know the new measures to boost Britain’s motor industry workers were working.

The Car Scrappage Scheme gives a £2,000 discount on a new vehicle to motorists who scrap a car which is more than ten years old. It has been hailed as a success by the car industry, with drivers rushing to buy the newest models. UK car sales rose by 2.4 per cent in July, the first rise for well over a year.

After receiving the keys to his new motor, Barry said:

"I’m thrilled to bits with my new car. We had been thinking of buying something new for a while, and this discount was too good an opportunity to miss. I traded in an N-reg, which had become costly to run and wasn’t worth very much. My new car is much more fuel efficient, and is in the lowest tax band. So, I’m doing my bit for the environment, supporting British workers and helping my own pocket at the same time. If anyone’s considering a new car, I’d really advise them to take advantage of this great offer while they still can."

Dawn added:

"The Government has put in place a range of measures to offer real help to people during the recession. The Car Scrappage Scheme seemed like a great idea, so when Barry got in touch, I wanted to see for myself how the scheme can help buyers and the car industry. The motor industry employs 800,000 people in the UK, so it’s crucial that we help to support workers where we can. As well as supporting the industry, a £2,000 discount is obviously very welcome for car owners, who are choosing to trade in more polluting older cars with more efficient new models."
