Responding to the Coalition Government’s budget, Dawn Primarolo said:
“This budget is disastrous for families in Bristol South. Those least responsible for the recession are being made to pay the most by this Liberal Democratic/Conservative Coalition. We will see VAT increased to 20%, tax credits massively cut, jobs at risk and less help for those in desperate need of housing. With average earnings in Bristol South well below the national average, our communities will be hit very hard.
“Bristol South residents will know not to expect anything else from the Tories, but they will be shocked at the willingness of the Lib Dems to go along with this savage cuts and tax rises. During the election, the Lib Dems rightly argued against immediate cuts to the economy. They also correctly predicted the Tories were planning to raise VAT, and warned of a ‘VAT bombshell’. Now, at the very first opportunity, the Lib Dems have chosen to hike VAT themselves. Residents who supported the Lib Dems at the election will rightly feel conned by this complete change in policy.”
