MPs hold talks on police funding

Dawn, Kerry and Doug 'will continue to lobby Ministers.'

Three of Bristol’s Labour MPs have met with Police Minister Tony McNulty to discuss levels of police funding.  Dawn Primarolo, Doug Naysmith and Kerry McCarthy lobbied the Minister in an attempt to secure an even better settlement for Avon and Somerset.  All Police Authorities are guaranteed an increase of at least 2.5 per cent a year, but the Home Office is moving towards a formula where funding increases will take the individual needs of Constabularies more into account.  This is likely to further benefit Avon and Somerset who are set to receive a funding increase of 3.5 per cent – the second highest increase of any force.

The MPs had previously raised this matter with the Minister but felt it was important to keep up the pressure.

Commenting after the meeting, Dawn said:

“We had a very productive meeting with Tony, and will continue to lobby Ministers to ensure that the new funding formula comes into effect as soon as possible. We’ve got more police officers than ever, and the new Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are doing a brilliant job in our communities, but there is always more to be done.”

Doug added:

“The new Home Office formula should help Avon and Somerset Constabulary, so we need to do all we can to make sure it’s on stream as soon as possible.  Our neighbourhood policing teams will shortly receive a further funding boost – with 43 new PCSOs funded by our Labour Council.”

Kerry concluded:

“Doug and I will be hoping to speak at a House of Commons debate about this important issue today.  We understand the concerns of the Police Authority, and will continue to make the case for the best possible deal for Avon and Somerset.”
