Dawn Primarolo to stand down at next election

Dawn Primarolo, Labour’s MP for Bristol South since 1987, has announced that she will stand down at the next General election.  Dawn told Labour Party members of her decision at this evening’s regular meeting of Bristol South Labour Party.  She will continue to work hard for Bristol South residents up until the day of the next General Election in 2015.

As well as serving her constituents, Dawn was one of the few MPs to serve continually as a Minister – in the Treasury, Department of Health and Department for Children, School

s and Families - during the Labour Governments of 1997 to 2010.  One of the few women to be appointed a privy counsellor, Dawn was elected by her fellow MPs as Deputy Speaker in 2010.  Her first responsibility, however, has always been to her constituents in Bristol South where she has been an open and approachable MP.  Dawn has worked with hundreds of community groups, held nearly 600 surgeries, and has been contacted by a staggering 48,000 constituents during her time as an MP so far.

Commenting after the meeting, Dawn said:

“It is a huge honour to represent the people of Bristol South, who have showed their confidence in me at six general elections.  It has been immensely rewarding to play a role in improving our communities, and I will always be grateful to people in Bristol South for giving me the opportunity to represent them in Parliament.  I am proud to have been part of hugely important campaigns, such as for the hospital at Hengrove Park, but also of being able to help many thousands of residents who have sought my advice when they have run into difficulti

es.  I wanted to give as much notice of my intentions as possible, but I can assure Bristol South residents that I will still be working as hard as ever from my office in Bedminster to improve our communities right up until the day of the next General Election.”

Leader of the Labour Party Ed Miliband added:

“I have worked closely with Dawn for almost fifteen years.  She has served the Labour Party and our country well as a Minister in the Treasury, Department of Health and Department for Children, Schools and Families.  Now, she is respected by MPs from all parties in her work as Deputy Speaker.  Above all, though, Dawn has always put her constituents first.  She has been a fantastic servant to the people of Bristol South, and I know that she will continue to fight hard for the residents of Bristol South in the coming years.”
