Working hard all year round for South Bristol
Dawn Primarolo, Labour MP for Bristol South, has backed the “Freedom From Fear” campaign which seeks to prevent violence, threats and abuse directed at retail staff. The campaign, which is being run by retail union Usdaw, highlights the fact that shopworkers are often confronted with violence as they go about their duties, and calls for stiffer sentences for offenders.
In support of the campaign, Dawn said:
“Violence against retail employees – and against other workers serving the public – needs to be taken seriously. A change in the law would ensure that offenders receive proper punishments and will send a clear message that this type of behaviour is unacceptable.”
Labour MPs supported an amendment to the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill in the House of Commons last week which would have introduced a specific additional offence of assaulting a worker serving the public. Conservative and Liberal Democrats MPs voted against the amendment.
