Dawn Primarolo, Labour’s MP for Bristol South, has visited Knowle West Health Park to meet with children and parents at the centre’s Young People’s Fitness Club.
The Club helps gets young people active, with a range of activities and games. Thanks to funding from the National Lottery, the Club is able to meet every Wednesday, to help keep children in Knowle West fit and healthy. Parents or children can sign up for the hour-long session for 50 pence.
After her visit, Dawn said:
"Clubs like this are absolutely essential to ensure that children learn how important it is to get regular exercise from an early age. The young people I met were really enthusiastic about the range of activities they can do at the club.
In the past, we’ve seen the NHS as something to make us better when we are ill. That’s not enough - our NHS needs to help people to stay healthy as well. So, with local initiatives like this supporting the Government’s Change4Life programme, we can really make a difference. It’s not the job of the NHS to tell people what to do but, by providing people with information on why staying fit and active is so important, parents and children are able to make informed choices about their lifestyles."
