Dawn Primarolo, Labour MP for Bristol South, has called on the Government to take action after it was revealed that energy companies’ profits have sky-rocketed in recent months.  Latest figures show the energy companies take, on average, £125 profit per customer per year.  In June, that figure was just £15.

Dawn has written to Energy Secretary Chris Huhne to ask him to take immediate action to bring the energy companies under control.

Commenting, Dawn said:

“This summer we saw a raft of price rises from the big energy companies.  As usual, we were told that high wholesale prices were to blame.  Today’s figures show that those claims were a nonsense – energy companies are increasing their profit margin on the back of millions of Britons struggling to pay the bills.”

“This has to stop.  People want fair pricing, with a tariff that they can understand.  With the winter fuel allowance cut this year and another cold winter forecast, it is time for the energy giants to play fair.  Bristol South residents worried about how they will heat their homes this winter will be disgusted by this news, and will expect the Government to make very clear to the energy companies that this limitless profiteering is not acceptable.”
