Future of the Highways Agency

Dawn Primarolo MP's response to constituents regarding the future of the Highways Agency:

"Thank you for your email in connection with your concerns regarding the Government’s proposals to change the Highways Agency from Executive Agency to a Government Owned Company.

These plans have been included in Part 1 of the Government’s Infrastructure Bill and I appreciate that concerns have been expressed such as whether this action could be a precursor to the privatisation and break-up of the road network and lead to the possible introduction of tolling.

These are important concerns that need to be thoroughly examined as the Infrastructure Bill progresses through Parliament.  Labour has already raised concerns about the plans and the Government gave assurances that any move to privatise the Highways Agency would require additional legislation. We also sought clarification that the Highways Agency will not be broken up into a series of companies.

The Infrastructure Bill is due to have its Report Stage in the House of Commons on 26 January.  I can assure you that Labour MPs will continue to carefully scrutinise this piece of legislation and I will closely follow its further progress.

Thank you once again for writing to me and for sharing your views”.
