Health Bill Threatens Future of NHS

NHS

Dawn Primarolo has urged the Government to take note of the views of health professionals and reconsider the multi billion pound reorganisation of the NHS.

Scathing editorials in the medical press have called on the Government to think again.  Leading journal The Lancet says that the Health and Social Care Bill “spells the end of the NHS,” while the editor of the BMJ believes the “Government would be foolish to press ahead.”

Commenting ahead of today’s Parliamentary debate, Dawn said:

“I have been inundated with letters and emails from Bristol South residents who just don’t understand why the Government want to press ahead with this costly and unnecessary reorganisation, particularly while cuts are being made left, right and centre.

“The residents who have been in touch with me realise that these changes would bring real danger to the NHS.  We could see a return to postcode lotteries, while family GPs will become overwhelmed with paperwork when they want to focus on caring for their patients.  Most worryingly, we will see an influx of private companies move into our NHS who are bound to put profit before patients.

"It’s not too late for the Government to back down.  They should be discussing the NHS with its patients, staff and trade unions.  Instead they seem intent on wrecking the NHS we all rely on.”
