Homelessness

Dawn Primarolo MP's response to constituents regarding Open Doors campaign on religious persecution:

"Thank you for your recent email regarding rise in homelessness.

The latest national figures from Crisis indicate that statutory homelessness has risen nationally by 17% in the last year. The most recent figures for Bristol published by the Department for Communities and Local Government are truly appalling, a 74% increase in the twelve months to September 2014. If this trend continues 1000 more families will become homeless in our city this year. Behind the statistics every one of these families is an individual tragedy, with children often displaced from school and also a significant impact on the health of all concerned.

By contrast under the last Labour government statutory homelessness fell by 70%.

I have publicly called on Bristol City Council to review their strategy of selling council homes and I also believe we must force those developers who are sitting on undeveloped sites to starting building now or lose the land. The long term solution to the housing crisis is plain to see, we must build many more homes to both buy and rent. In my view this must include significant number of new Council homes.

Please do not hesitate to contact me again if I can be of further help with this or any other matter.

Yours sincerely

Dawn Primarolo
Labour MP for Bristol South"
