MPs vote in favour of same sex marriage

Yesterday MPs voted on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples Bill) with 400 MPs supporting the Bill and 175 voting against.

As Deputy Speaker Dawn does not vote in divisions in the House of Commons because she is responsible for the fair running of debates and votes.

Unusually Dawn was not in Parliament yesterday because she is recovering at home following recent hip replacement surgery. However, Dawn was very pleased that MPs gave such overwhelming support to the Bill. She has always worked hard to further the rights of her LGBT constituents.

As Public Health Minister Dawn brought forward the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act which extended rights to same sex parents and equal marriage legislation builds on the previous Labour Government’s achievements in this area.
