Number 10 Petitions Website Must Be Restored

10 Downing StreetLabour MP for Bristol South Dawn Primarolo has written to the Prime Minister, calling on him to immediately reinstate the system where citizens can directly petition Number 10.  Dawn was trying to set up a petition calling on the Government not to abolish the Child Trust Fund, but found that the service has been suspended.

The e-petition site was set up by the former Labour Government, in conjunction with, in 2006.  Petitions have been signed by over 5 million people on a huge range of issues, with Number 10 providing a response for all petitions attracting more than 500 signatures.

Commenting on Number 10’s withdrawal of the service, Dawn said:

“A large number of Bristol South residents have been in touch with me to express their horror at the Government’s decision to axe the Child Trust Fund.  So, as part of my campaign to try to convince the Government to save it, I thought I’d take my concerns straight to the Prime Minister.

"When I tried to submit the petition, a message told me that the Government were ‘assessing how best to proceed’ with the service.  In the meantime, petitions have been suspended.

"Given the enormously unpopular decisions this Government has already made, you would have thought an open administration would have continued with a service that has worked well for nearly four years.  Instead, people who want to bring their concerns directly and easily to the Prime Minister are left in limbo.

"Some of the petitions people want to submit will, I’m sure, be uncomfortable for Mr Cameron.  But you can’t slash university places, support for young job hunters and literacy programmes for children and expect nobody to complain.

"The Prime Minister talks about ‘new politics’ – if he’s genuine, he’ll restore this service immediately."
