Salcombe Road Betrayal

Residents in Knowle will feel betrayed by the Lib Dems’ failure to protect Salcombe Road Rec. from unwanted development.  That’s the message from Labour MP for Bristol South Dawn Primarolo, who has pledged to continue to fight the plans.

Following intense public pressure, the Lib Dems have announced that the Council will spare many of the sites they had intended to sell.  Despite more than 300 people signing the petition to protect the space at Salcombe Road, the Lib Dems look set to press ahead with the sale regardless.

Commenting, Dawn, who wrote to residents living near the park to ask for their views on the proposed sale, said:

“The Council’s strategy has been a disaster.  They have succeeded only in causing huge upset and anger in communities.  No doubt the Lib Dems feel that they’ve pulled a rabbit out of the hat by sparing some land.  That is to be welcomed but will, sadly, be of no comfort to residents in Knowle.

“Given that the Councillor responsible for this utter shambles is supposed to represent Knowle ward, I do find it extraordinary that he seems to be content to ignore the wishes of so many people.  After causing unnecessary anger and worry, he has finally responded to concerns of people in some other parts of the city, but it is a real shame that he’s not bothered to act on the concerns of his own constituents.

“Residents I have spoken to understandably don’t want to lose their green space, especially if the proceeds for the sale go to parks improvements in other areas of the city.  I will continue to work with local people to do all that I can, even at this late stage, to convince the Council to think again."
