Save Reading Recovery!

Ahead of the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review Dawn Primarolo has written to Education Secretary Michael Gove, to ask him not to cut Bristol’s highly successful Reading Recovery programme.

Reading Recovery, which operates in 43 of Bristol’s schools, provides support to children who are falling behind with their reading at primary school.  The project is funded through the previous Labour Government’s Every Child a Reader initiative.  Parents and other volunteers often come into schools to help the specialist teachers who are delivering the project.

Commenting, Dawn said:

“When the Government took office, there were rumours that Every Child a Reader and Reading Recovery were going to be scrapped.  Thankfully, the projects have their funding for the current financial year secured.  I do worry, however, that with the Government’s avalanche of cuts, Reading Recovery might be a casualty.

"I’ve written to Michael Gove to explain just how valuable Reading Recovery is.  This is a project which delivers results – helping make sure that all children learn to read well at primary school.  What can be more important than that?

"In the past, at schools like Victoria Park in Bristol South, nearly half of pupils couldn’t read properly by the age of seven.  Now, thankfully, virtually all of the children can.  That hasn’t happened by magic.  It’s thanks to the hard work of the children and the innovative Reading Recovery team, who have received fantastic support from teachers and parents.  Projects like this are vital to Bristol’s, and Britain’s, future.  I hope that the Government will see sense and protect, and expand, Reading Recovery.”
