School Places Update

Southville Primary School has agreed to accept an additional class in September.  The important decision means that, with Governing bodies at Compass Point and Ashton Gate having already agreed to take extra children this year, ninety new places will have been provided for our area.

Commenting, Sean, who has been a Governor at Southville for nearly four years, said:

“The Governors at Southville wanted to play our part to help prevent the school places crisis our area faced last year.  We did, however, want to be sure that taking on additional pupils did not affect the safety or learning of children currently at the school.  I am pleased with the Council’s proposals, which provide a real opportunity for the school, as well as helping the community as a whole.

The reality of the situation is that, unless action is taken, there will be further pressure on school places next year.  The Council has to move fast to secure new sites for additional provision – and I’ve called on the councillor in charge of education to use compulsory purchase powers if she needs to do so to find the right site.”

The funding situation is more promising, with the Government announcing Bristol will receive an extra £23 million to create school places – the highest allocation outside of London.  This is testament to the hard work of our MP, Dawn Primarolo, who met with the Schools Minister to lobby on Bristol’s behalf.  In addition, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors united to invest £20 million of Council funding for additional school places, with only the Green Party’s councillors voting against.
