Severn Barrage Sunk

SevernBarrage

Dawn Primarolo has reacted with anger to the news that the Government are scrapping plans to harness the tidal energy of the Severn.

Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, will instead press ahead with nuclear power, even though he claims to be opposed to it.  It is estimated that five per cent of the UK’s electricity could have been generated by the Severn, which has the world’s second largest tidal range.

Commenting, Dawn said:

“The new Government’s claim that they would be the ‘greenest ever’ has been shot out of the water.  Labour commissioned a detailed feasibility study to see how best we could harness the immense power of the Severn, while also preserving the unique habitat of the estuary.  Proceeding with this project would have generated five per cent of our electricity needs through a clean and proven technology.  It would also have created thousands of jobs.

"It is such a shame that the Government have shown such a lack of ambition on green energy.  We need a mix of sources to meet our energy needs, and we’re just letting this one ebb away.  Once again, the Lib Dems are happy to go along with green gimmicks, but they are frightened to take the tough decisions.”
