Spending Cuts Put Recovery at Risk

Huge cuts to Government spending put the economic recovery at risk, Dawn Primarolo warned today.  Labour’s MP for Bristol South believes that the cuts – with more to come – could lead to a ‘double-dip’ recession.

Commenting, Dawn said:

“These cuts come at the worst time.  We’re slowly turning the corner economically, thanks the hard work of millions of employers and employees all over the country backed by Labour’s policies.  But slashing budgets for business, education and universities right now makes no sense whatsoever.

"Of course, nobody in Bristol South will be surprised by the Tories’ dogmatic obsession in cutting public spending.  They opposed our measures to protect the economy during the recession, and have now put it at risk as soon as they’ve got the keys to Downing Street.

"What’s particularly disappointing though, is the willingness of the Lib Dems to go along with these proposals.  Just weeks ago, the Lib Dems said, ‘If spending is cut too soon, it would undermine the much needed recovery and cost jobs.’ They were absolutely right then, but have now cast aside their principles for a few seats in Cabinet.  People in Bristol South who voted Liberal Democrat will be feeling betrayed by their lurch to the right, and their apparent acceptance of Conservative dogma that will hit our communities hard.”
