Standardised Packaging

Dawn Primarolo MP's reply to constituents regarding standardised packaging of tobacco:

"The Government have finally announced they will finally bring forward legislation for standardised packaging of tobacco products in England and Wales. This will happen before the end of this Parliament and could come into force next year.

As a former Public Health Minister and Children’s Minister in the last Labour Government, I welcome this and have long believed that standardised packaging is an important way to prevent children and young people from taking up smoking. Standardised packaging is also supported by health campaigners, the Chief Medical Officer and the Government’s own reviews. I know from the large number of letters and e-mails I have received that there is also strong public support for this.

MPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of introducing standardised packaging almost a year ago, so while it is disappointing that the Government have taken so long on this, it is welcome that they have now finally agreed to legislate for standardised packaging.

Yours sincerely

Dawn Primarolo

Labour MP for Bristol South"
