Dawn Primarolo MP's latest response to constituents regarding Syrian Refugees:
I am writing further to our correspondence regarding the refugee crisis in Syria and the recent Geneva UN Ministerial Conference on Resettlement.
As you probably know Home Office statistics published on 27th November 2014 show that just 90 people have been granted humanitarian protection under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme. From January-June 2014 a further 521 Syrians were granted asylum or humanitarian protection in the UK.
This is simply not good enough, nor is it good enough that the Government failed to respond to the UN's appeal at Geneva for countries to increase support for the UN's own limited refugee programme.
Other countries such as Germany and Australia have offered a far larger number of places as part of the UN's refugee programme. I believe the Government now urgently need to do more to help the most vulnerable Syrian refugees, including by signing up to the UN programme.
