Windmill Hill latest: affordable housing

Your labour candidates for Windmill Hill have been talking to residents and the clear message is that the rising cost of housing must be tackled.

Nearly half of the homes in the area are rented, either privately or from housing associations or the council. Last year rents increased across Bristol by 18% and that is putting financial pressure on residents of Windmill Hill.

Your Labour candidates, Lucy Whittle and Jon Wellington, will work with the Mayor to bring about fairer rents, and to make sure that landlords can’t exploit the area’s popularity by continuing to increase rents or threatening eviction to those who are being priced out.

The Malago Green development in Windmill Hill offers a great opportunity for good quality affordable homes. Lucy and Jon recently attended an event held by the community group Windmill Hill Action for Malago (WHaM) and were impressed by the group’s vision for the area and their determination to get local people involved in the planning and design process. Lucy said: “Planning should be a dialogue between all interested parties: residents, developers, local businesses and community groups. Jon said: Local input in the planning process will help reduce the pressure on schools, GPs and other services already under strain.”
